Bald Eagle

Have you seen a real life Bald Eagle?  Or maybe, you’ve seen one in a history book, on a poster, or even MONEY!  The Bald Eagle is the United States national bird, and they are pretty cool!

Critter At A Glance

What makes these critters so cool?  Bald Eagles may not be actually BALD, but they have BOLD white feathered heads, a wingspan of 5-8 feet, and the ability to glide through the sky effortlessly. They speed dive on prey far below them and soar with their wings almost flat. They are birds of prey and are at the top of the food chain!

How do they raise their young?  Bald Eagles build huge nests, weighing up to 2000 lbs. Males and females usually pair up for life and take turns incubating their eggs.  Baby chicks stay in their parent’s nest until about 10-12 weeks, but they stick close by longer to learn from parents.

Do they really screech?  Yes, and no.  They do make a high pitch weak scream, but not like many of the movies we see with a STRONG sound.  The red-tailed hawk has a much scarier sound, so movies often put their call over the sound of the actual eagle.

What can we learn about Bald Eagles from George and Martha?

Are you ready for an out of this world fact?

This is a strange but true fact! Bald eagles sometimes grab each other's feet and spin while plummeting to the earth. Usually, the pair will separate before hitting the ground. Talk about a crazy picture!
