Critter At A Glance
What are their secret talents? The Blue Jay is a pretty common sight in areas all over Eastern and Central United States. But, they have some secret skills many don’t know about. They are very good at mimicking the sound of a hawk, which even tricks birdwatchers! They even use this skill to scare other birds into dropping food. They are very good at gathering nuts. One small part of their throat is used to hold nuts until they find a way to stash it, much like a squirrel. They have a strong, black, beek which they use to crack open nut shells.
What are their families like? Blue Jays are faithful companions with each other their whole life. Mother and father birds work together to build nests, and the father brings food to the mother while she sits on eggs. The chicks also get food from their dad, and they stay with their parents through fall like a little family.
Let’s jump into an exciting story about Hunter and Libby the Blue Jays. I think they have some more to teach us about this special species!
