Bluegill
If you’ve ever gone fishing, you’re sure to have seen one of these special little fish! Let’s dive into some fresh water and learn some more about Bluegill.
Critter At A Glance
What stands out about this critter? Bluegill can grow up to 12 inches and have blue and purple faces with distinct dark green bands on their sides and yellow bellies. Bluegill can swim very fast and change movements in the water quickly. They have thin slender bodies which help them accelerate quickly. They are very important parts of the food chain because they are food for a lot of different animals. They are prey for Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye, and Heron.
What do they eat? Bluegill are omnivores. They will eat anything that can fit in their mouths, but usually eat just small fish and aquatic bugs.
What do we know about their young? Bluegill have many offspring. Usually the mother lays eggs in a nest during the late spring or early summer. Once there is an established nest, the males guard them.
