Tiger

I spy a CRITTER with orange and black stripes, strong claws and teeth, and can grow to be 670 lbs.

Let’s jump on a plane and travel to the Indonesian island of Sumatra to learn some more about this amazing species…….the TIGER

Critter At A Glance

What are their critter talents?  Tigers are ambush predators and they use their strength to pounce on prey.  They are carnivorous and eat any meat they can find.  Unlike most cats, tigers are amazing swimmers and actually enjoy it too.

How do they care for their cubs?  Mother tigers take care of their cubs until they’re 18 months old.  But, once they’re 8 months old, they start to practice hunting with their mom. They have a lot to learn about hunting and finding food on their own.  Once they are old enough, tigers usually live alone.

How do they communicate?  Like most cats they have many sounds they use to communicate.  They can roar, growl, snarl, grunt, moan, mew and hiss.  They also mark their scent on areas to tell others they have been there!

Are you ready for an out of this world fact?

If you saw a tiger with a haircut, you’d still know it’s a tiger! Their skin is also striped beneath the patterned fur. The darkness of the skin seems to be directly related to the darkness of the fur.

Critter Protectors we need you, so make sure you join the CritterQ!

Let’s play a game of Tiger Pounce!  You’ll need a pile of balls, beanbags, or pillows to be your PREY.

  • Grab a few people to join in the game, and place the PREY in a pile.  Everyone stands in a circle around the pile.

  • Take turns being the tagger who says, “3-2-1 POUNCE!”

  • Rush to the center pile of PREY before the tagger can tag you.  If you make it to the pile, you're safe and can grab your PREY!

  • Keep playing until the pile of PREY is gone.  The winner is the last one out or the one with the most PREY.

Can you tell us if you played the game?! #heymrjim #kidsanimalstories
