White Tailed Deer

The critter we are ZOOMING in on today is very common across North America.  They are found in Southern Canada all the way down through Central United States.  Have you ever seen a White Tailed Deer?  It’s one super cool critter!

Critter Protectors we need you to learn more about this critter! Let’s Go!

Critter At A Glance

What is their critter talent?  These are the smallest of the deer species and are either reddish colored in the summer or gray in the winter.  They shed their coats and change colors slightly to camouflage into their environment.  White Tail Deers are usually seen at dawn or dusk.  They spend the sunny part of the day hiding.  They are also really good, swift swimmers and use this ability to get away from predators.

Do they live in large groups?  White Tail Deers are mostly solitary animals.  They spend most of their time alone, but mothers are very protective of their baby fawns.  Sometimes you can see groups of female deer together as well.

What do they eat?  White Tailed Deer eat lots of vegetation, which means they are herbivores.  They eat buds, twigs, bushes and even evergreen or fir trees in the winter time.  They eat what they can find.

Be sure to listen to the story of Miss. Doe and her baby named Fawn!

Are you ready for an out of this world fact?

Male White Tailed Deers have antlers, but they are not used for weapons.  They shed old antlers each year and grow new ones before finding a female deer in the spring.  Can you imagine growing HUGE horns every single year from scratch?
